Seeing “Connected, no internet” means your computer has joined the local Wi-Fi network, but Windows or macOS cannot confirm a working path to the internet. That does not always mean the Wi-Fi signal is bad. The failure may be at the computer, router, modem, DNS service, or internet provider.
Start with the least disruptive checks. Avoid resetting the router, forgetting the network, or changing advanced settings until you know where the problem is. If the computer contains unsaved work, save it before restarting or changing the network connection.
First, find out how widespread the problem is
Use a phone or another computer on the same Wi-Fi network and try to open a few unrelated websites. If every device is offline, the problem is probably the router, modem, service connection, or provider. If only one computer is affected, focus on that computer’s network settings, adapter, VPN, or security software.
Also check whether the problem affects both Wi-Fi and Ethernet:
- Wi-Fi only: The wireless adapter, signal, saved network profile, or wireless interference may be involved.
- Wi-Fi and Ethernet: The router, modem, DNS, internet service, or computer-wide network configuration is more likely.
- Only one website fails: The website itself may be unavailable. Test several sites before changing settings.
Check for a service outage or connection issue
Look at the modem and router lights without pressing any reset buttons. A warning light, missing online light, or repeated restart pattern can indicate a provider-side or equipment problem. The exact light meanings differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s guide or your internet provider’s support page if available.
If all devices have lost internet access, check the provider’s outage page from cellular data or contact the provider. In the Omaha metro, a local outage, maintenance event, damaged line, or neighborhood equipment problem can affect multiple homes or businesses at once. An outage report is more useful than repeatedly changing settings on each computer.
Restart the connection in the right order
A normal restart can clear a temporary fault, but do it in a controlled order:
- Shut down the affected computer or disconnect it from Wi-Fi.
- Unplug the router’s power cable. If you have a separate modem or fiber gateway, unplug that as well.
- Wait at least 30 seconds. Do not press a pinhole reset button.
- Reconnect the modem or fiber gateway first and wait for its normal online status.
- Reconnect the router, if separate, and wait for it to finish starting.
- Restart the computer and test a few websites.
This process is different from a factory reset. A factory reset erases configuration and may remove the provider settings, wireless network name, password, port rules, and other custom settings. Do not use it as a first troubleshooting step, especially on a small-business network.
Test the computer without relying on one browser
Try another browser or a built-in application that uses the internet. If one browser fails while another works, the connection may be fine and the issue may involve browser extensions, proxy settings, cached data, or security software.
If every browser and online application fails, temporarily disconnect from any VPN. A VPN can block traffic when its service is unavailable or when its network filter becomes stuck. Do not remove the VPN yet if it is required for work access; disconnecting is a safer diagnostic step than deleting its configuration.
On Windows, open Settings > Network & internet and confirm that Airplane mode is off. Select the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and check whether Windows reports an IP address and gateway. On a Mac, open System Settings > Network, select the active connection, and review its status and details.
Use a simple connection test
Web browsers depend on several services, so a browser error alone does not identify the fault. A basic test can separate internet routing from DNS name resolution.
On Windows, open Terminal or Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
Look for the active adapter. An address beginning with 169.254, or no default gateway, usually means the computer did not receive a normal address from the router. This points toward the adapter, Wi-Fi connection, DHCP service, or router rather than a website problem.
You can then test a domain name:
ping example.com
On macOS, open Terminal and run the same command. A response does not prove that every website or application will work, and a failed ping does not always prove that the internet is down because some networks block ping traffic. Treat the result as a clue, not a final diagnosis.
Check whether DNS is the problem
DNS translates names such as a website address into numerical internet addresses. If DNS is failing, the computer may appear connected but show errors such as “server DNS address could not be found.” Other applications may also fail to sign in.
Try opening a known site by name in a different browser first. If general connectivity tests work but names consistently fail, restart the computer and router before changing DNS. Temporary DNS problems often clear without a permanent configuration change.
If the problem continues, review the DNS settings on the computer and router. A manual DNS address may have been added by a VPN, security program, previous troubleshooting attempt, or malware. Do not copy random DNS addresses from an unknown website. If a work computer uses company-managed settings, check with the administrator before changing them.
Forget and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network carefully
If only Wi-Fi is affected and other devices can connect, removing the saved wireless profile can help when its stored password or configuration is damaged.
On Windows, go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, and choose Forget. On a Mac, open System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details for the network and remove or forget it using the available controls. Reconnect using the correct wireless password.
Before doing this, make sure you know the password and network name. Forgetting the network will not repair a provider outage, and it can make access harder if the password is not available. Be especially careful with computers used at a workplace, where wireless profiles may be centrally managed.
Inspect the adapter and network software
A recently installed update, driver, VPN, endpoint-security product, or virtual machine can alter networking. If the issue began immediately after one of these changes, note the timing and consider undoing only the recent change through its normal uninstall or rollback option.
On Windows, check Device Manager > Network adapters for a warning symbol. An adapter that is disabled, missing, or reporting an error may need a driver or hardware diagnosis. Avoid downloading drivers from advertising-heavy driver sites. Use the computer manufacturer, adapter manufacturer, or Windows Update when the device is stable enough to do so.
On a Mac, check whether the Wi-Fi hardware appears normally in System Settings > Network and whether the same network works in another user account or with Ethernet. If a USB network adapter is involved, test its cable and port as well.
When advanced network resets are appropriate
Windows includes network reset tools that remove and recreate adapters and network settings. These can help after corrupted configuration, but they may remove saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN components, virtual adapters, and custom settings. A business computer may lose access to required resources until it is configured again.
Use a full network reset only after recording important settings and confirming that the problem is limited to that computer. If the device is owned or managed by an employer, contact the administrator first. Do not use registry edits, “optimizer” utilities, or random command lists that promise instant internet repair.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop and seek assistance when multiple devices remain offline after a normal modem and router restart; the modem shows an abnormal status; the computer repeatedly loses its network adapter; or the problem began after liquid exposure, a power event, or physical damage.
Also stop before changing settings if you need a VPN for work, use static IP addresses, rely on network storage, or have a business router with custom rules. Record the exact message, which devices are affected, the status lights, and what changed before the failure. That information can distinguish an internet-service problem from a computer configuration or hardware fault and helps avoid unnecessary resets.
The “connected, no internet” message is a starting clue rather than a diagnosis. Testing another device, restarting equipment safely, checking for VPN or DNS interference, and identifying whether Ethernet behaves differently will usually narrow the problem without risking the rest of the network.
