A MacBook can become warm during video calls, software updates, photo exports, gaming, or other demanding work. Warmth alone does not always indicate a fault. However, unusually hot surfaces, a fan that runs constantly, sudden slowdowns, unexpected shutdowns, or a battery that appears swollen deserve attention.
Overheating is a symptom rather than a single diagnosis. The cause may be a busy application, poor ventilation, a failed fan, dust inside the cooling system, a battery problem, or a sensor or logic-board fault. The safest approach is to check the low-risk causes first and stop before opening the MacBook or continuing to use it if there are signs of battery or electrical damage.
First, recognize when the heat may be unsafe
Save your work and shut down the MacBook if it is too hot to handle comfortably, repeatedly shuts down, smells unusual, shows smoke, makes crackling sounds, or has a case, trackpad, or bottom cover that is lifting or bulging. A raised trackpad or separating case can indicate a swollen battery.
Do not press on a swollen battery, puncture the case, use a damaged charger, or continue charging a MacBook that shows signs of battery swelling. Keep it away from flammable materials and arrange professional service. Do not place a hot or damaged battery in a freezer or attempt to remove it without the correct tools and experience.
If the MacBook is simply warm but operating normally, shut it down or put it to sleep before moving it to a hard, clear surface. Avoid using it on a bed, blanket, couch, or clothing, where vents may be blocked.
Common reasons a MacBook gets hot
- High processor or graphics use: Video editing, 3D work, games, large photo exports, virtual machines, and some browser tabs can keep the processor busy.
- Background tasks: macOS updates, cloud synchronization, Spotlight indexing, photo analysis, backups, and security scans may temporarily increase activity.
- Blocked airflow: Dust, soft surfaces, or a tight protective case can restrict cooling. Some MacBook models use passive cooling, while others use internal fans.
- Warm surroundings: Direct sunlight, a hot vehicle, or a poorly ventilated desk can raise the starting temperature.
- External displays and accessories: High-resolution monitors, docks, and multiple peripherals can increase graphics and power demands, especially during sustained use.
- Hardware trouble: A fan that does not operate correctly, a degraded battery, a damaged charging system, or a temperature-sensor fault can cause abnormal heating.
Check what is using the MacBook’s resources
macOS includes Activity Monitor, which can help identify software that is keeping the MacBook busy.
- Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
- On the CPU tab, select the “% CPU” column to sort processes by current use.
- Look for an application you recognize that is using substantial CPU for an extended period, rather than focusing on a single brief spike.
- Check the Energy tab for applications with high energy impact or preventing sleep.
- Close an application normally if possible. If it has stopped responding, select it and use the stop button, but avoid ending unfamiliar system processes merely because their names look technical.
A process with a high percentage can be normal during a short task. A browser with many tabs, a video-conferencing application, or a file-sync utility may use more resources while working. If an unfamiliar process repeatedly consumes resources, update macOS and the affected application, then investigate the software before deleting system files.
Reduce heat without risking your files
- Restart the MacBook. This can clear a temporary application or background-task problem, but it does not repair an underlying hardware fault.
- Install pending macOS and application updates using the normal System Settings process. Keep important files backed up before major updates.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, docks, external drives, and displays temporarily. Reconnect them one at a time if the heat improves.
- Use the MacBook on a hard, level surface with space around its vents. Do not cover the keyboard or place the computer on an improvised cooling pad that could introduce moisture or static.
- Lower demanding workloads temporarily. For example, pause a large export or close unused video streams and browser tabs.
- Check whether a protective case, keyboard cover, or dust buildup around external vents is restricting airflow. Remove accessories for testing if they can be removed safely.
A fan may become audible during sustained work. That is generally a sign that the cooling system is responding, not proof that the MacBook is failing. Conversely, silence is not automatically reassuring: some MacBook models cool passively, and a fan may not run during light work.
Consider charging and battery condition
Charging can add heat, especially when the MacBook is also performing demanding work. Use a compatible, undamaged Apple or reputable USB-C power adapter and cable with sufficient power for the model. If the adapter, cable, or connector becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, has visible damage, or disconnects repeatedly, stop using it.
To review battery information, open System Settings > Battery and inspect the battery health information available for your macOS version. “Service Recommended,” rapid capacity loss, unexpected shutdowns, or a battery that drains unusually quickly do not identify the exact fault by themselves, but they justify a closer inspection.
Battery health menus cannot detect every physical battery problem. Treat a lifted trackpad, uneven bottom case, gaps in the enclosure, chemical odor, or heat concentrated around the battery area as a physical-service issue. Do not continue charging while waiting to see whether the swelling improves.
Check whether the problem is software or hardware
Note when the overheating occurs. Does it happen only during a particular application, while charging, with an external monitor connected, or immediately after startup? Or does the MacBook become hot while sitting idle with no accessories attached? These details help separate a workload problem from a cooling or power fault.
After backing up important files, start the Mac in Safe Mode where practical and observe whether the same behavior occurs with fewer third-party components loading. The exact startup method differs between Apple silicon and Intel MacBook models, so use Apple’s instructions for the model rather than guessing key combinations.
If the MacBook remains abnormally hot while idle, has no apparent high-use application, or shuts down under modest work, professional diagnostics may be appropriate. A technician may need to inspect fan operation, airflow, battery condition, temperature readings, charging behavior, and the logic board. Software temperature utilities can be useful clues, but their readings and labels should not be treated as a complete diagnosis.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop using the MacBook and arrange service when:
- The enclosure or trackpad is lifting or visibly swollen.
- There is smoke, an electrical smell, liquid contamination, or evidence of a damaged charger.
- The computer repeatedly powers off, restarts, or becomes extremely hot during light use.
- A fan makes grinding, scraping, or irregular noises, or never responds when sustained work should produce cooling demand.
- Heat began after a drop, liquid spill, repair, or charging incident.
- You cannot identify the cause and continued use could put important data at risk.
Before service, make a current backup if the MacBook is stable enough to do so. If the battery is swollen, unusually hot, or physically damaged, do not keep powering it on just to create a backup; tell the technician about the data that matters and the battery symptoms. Do not erase the MacBook or reinstall macOS as a first response, since that can complicate recovery and may not address a hardware cause.
