A Windows computer that has become slow can have several different causes. It may be running out of storage, loading too many background programs, overheating, using a failing drive, or struggling with a hardware limitation. The safest approach is to identify the pattern before changing anything important.
Do not begin by deleting random folders, resetting Windows, or installing a “PC cleaner.” Those steps can remove personal files, application data, saved settings, or evidence that helps identify a hardware problem. If the computer contains important business, tax, school, or family files, confirm that a current backup exists before performing major cleanup.
First, identify when the computer is slow
Pay attention to the timing and type of slowdown. Different symptoms point toward different areas:
- Slow immediately after startup: Too many startup applications, a damaged Windows installation, a nearly full system drive, or a drive that is beginning to fail may be involved.
- Slow only when opening files or programs: Storage performance, insufficient memory, or antivirus and cloud-sync activity are possible causes.
- Slow after several minutes of use: Heat buildup, a memory leak, or a program that gradually consumes system resources deserves attention.
- Slow only online: The computer may be working normally while the real issue is Wi-Fi, the internet connection, a browser extension, or a particular website.
- Freezing, clicking sounds, blue screens, or disappearing files: Stop treating this as ordinary slowness. Back up important data as soon as possible and avoid repeated forced restarts.
A single slow application does not necessarily mean the entire computer needs an upgrade. Test more than one program and compare local tasks, such as opening File Explorer, with internet-based tasks.
Check Task Manager before changing settings
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If the small view appears, select More details. On the Processes tab, watch the CPU, Memory, Disk, and Network columns while the computer is slow.
- CPU near 100 percent: A program, update, browser tab, security scan, or background process may be using most processor time.
- Memory consistently near full: Windows may be relying heavily on the page file. Closing applications can help temporarily, but repeated memory pressure may indicate that more RAM is appropriate.
- Disk activity near 100 percent: This does not always mean the drive is full or defective. Windows updates, indexing, antivirus scans, cloud synchronization, or a slow mechanical hard drive can all contribute.
- Network activity is high: A download, backup, sync service, or update may be using the connection.
Sort each column by selecting its heading and note which process rises to the top. Do not end a process merely because its name looks unfamiliar. Some Windows processes have technical names, and stopping the wrong process can close applications or destabilize the session. If you do not recognize a process, search for its publisher and installation location rather than downloading a tool that promises to identify it.
Check free storage safely
Open Settings > System > Storage. A Windows system drive with very little free space can become difficult to maintain, especially during updates and temporary operations. The exact amount of free space needed varies by computer and workload, so treat low free space as a warning rather than relying on one universal number.
Review the categories shown by Windows. Personal documents, pictures, videos, downloads, installed applications, and temporary files need different handling.
- Move personal files only after confirming they are backed up and that the destination is reliable.
- Review the Downloads folder manually. Do not assume every downloaded file is disposable.
- Uninstall applications from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, not by deleting their folders.
- Use Windows temporary-file cleanup carefully. Read the descriptions before selecting categories.
- Do not delete recovery partitions, manufacturer folders, driver packages, or folders you cannot identify.
Warning: If BitLocker or another form of device encryption is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key before major repairs or hardware changes. A cleanup operation normally should not request the key, but firmware changes, motherboard work, or other recovery events can. The recovery key should be obtained through the authorized Microsoft account or organization that manages the computer; encryption must not be bypassed.
Reduce unnecessary startup activity
In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab. This list shows programs that may launch when Windows starts. Disable only applications you recognize and do not need running at every login. Disabling a startup entry does not usually uninstall the program; it prevents automatic launch and can be reversed later.
Common examples that may not need to start automatically include meeting software, game launchers, update helpers, and utilities for devices no longer in use. Leave security software, touchpad or hotkey utilities, backup software, and business management tools alone unless you understand their function.
Restart after making a small number of changes and check whether the startup time or normal use changes. Changing dozens of entries at once makes it harder to identify the cause and can interfere with legitimate tools.
Install updates, but control the timing
Windows updates and hardware driver updates can address bugs, security issues, and compatibility problems. Before updating, save open work and confirm that important files are backed up. Keep the computer connected to reliable power, particularly during firmware or BIOS updates.
Use Settings > Windows Update for normal Windows updates. Obtain drivers from Windows Update or the computer manufacturer when a driver change is actually needed. Avoid driver-download utilities that scan the system and offer large batches of replacements without clear documentation.
If the slowdown began immediately after a particular update or driver change, record the date and change before attempting a rollback. A rollback may be appropriate in some cases, but it can also remove a security or compatibility fix. When a business computer is involved, check with the person responsible for its software before reversing updates.
Check for heat and hardware warning signs
Listen for a fan that runs loudly all the time, feel for unusually hot surfaces without blocking vents, and note whether the computer slows under heavier work. Dust buildup, blocked vents, a failed fan, or dried thermal material can cause a processor to reduce speed to control temperature.
Use the computer on a hard, flat surface while testing. Do not open a laptop, remove a desktop power supply cover, or probe inside powered equipment unless you are trained to do so. Desktop power supplies can contain hazardous stored electrical energy even after unplugging.
Warning signs of a possible storage failure include repeated freezes during file access, corrupted files, clicking or grinding from a mechanical drive, SMART warnings, and a drive that intermittently disappears from Windows. Back up important data before running repeated repair scans. If the drive is failing, extensive scanning can increase stress and may not improve recoverability.
Decide whether the problem is software or an upgrade limit
After checking storage, startup activity, temperatures, and resource usage, consider the computer’s age and workload. A system with a mechanical hard drive may feel slow during startup and application loading even when Windows is healthy. A computer with limited memory may struggle when many browser tabs and office applications are open. A newer solid-state drive or additional compatible memory can sometimes be a sensible upgrade, but compatibility must be confirmed first.

When to stop troubleshooting
Stop and seek professional help if the computer is losing files, producing unusual drive sounds, repeatedly crashing, showing encryption recovery prompts, overheating, or failing to boot. Also stop before reinstalling Windows if you have not verified a backup and confirmed that you can reinstall required applications and access needed accounts.
