Seven Signs Your Computer’s Power Supply Is Failing

Unexpected shutdowns, burning smells, and unstable startup can point to a failing power supply—but several other faults can look similar. Learn what to check safely and when to stop troubleshooting.

A failing power supply can cause some of the most confusing computer problems. The symptoms may appear random: a desktop shuts off during a game, refuses to start, or reboots whenever a printer or external drive is connected. In other cases, the first warning is a fan noise or an unusual smell.

These signs do not prove that the power supply is defective. Overheating, a failing motherboard, loose connections, damaged memory, a bad graphics card, and unstable power from the wall can produce similar symptoms. The goal is to recognize patterns, protect your data, and avoid repeated power-on attempts when there may be an electrical problem.

What the power supply does

In a desktop PC, the power supply unit (PSU) converts household AC electricity into the regulated DC voltages used by the motherboard, processor, drives, fans, and graphics card. It also provides protection against certain electrical faults. A PSU that is aging, overloaded, damaged, or exposed to heat may become unstable before it stops working completely.

Laptops use an external AC adapter and an internal charging and power circuit rather than a standard desktop PSU. The warning signs below apply most directly to desktop computers, although charging problems on a laptop can have similar causes.

Seven signs that deserve attention

1. The computer shuts off without warning

A sudden, complete loss of power is one of the more important PSU warning signs. The screen goes black, fans stop, and the computer behaves as if the power cord was removed. This may happen during demanding work such as gaming, video editing, 3D applications, or large file transfers, when the system requires more power.

However, overheating can cause the same result. A clogged heatsink, failed CPU cooler, or blocked ventilation can trigger thermal protection. A loose wall connection, failing surge protector, or defective motherboard power circuit is also possible. If the shutdowns continue, avoid treating them as an ordinary Windows problem and check the electrical and cooling causes first.

2. It restarts or crashes when the workload increases

A computer that runs normally on the desktop but restarts during demanding tasks may be experiencing a power delivery problem. A PSU can appear adequate at idle while becoming unstable as the processor and graphics card draw more current.

Unexpected restarts can also result from graphics drivers, faulty memory, processor overheating, or a software crash. Windows may record a critical power event, but that type of entry generally confirms only that the previous shutdown was unexpected; it does not identify the failed component by itself.

3. Startup is inconsistent or requires repeated attempts

Watch for a desktop that sometimes starts normally, sometimes starts after several presses of the power button, or powers on briefly and then stops. Delayed startup can occur when a PSU is not producing stable output during the initial power-on sequence.

Do not assume this pattern always means the PSU. A weak CMOS battery, a stuck power button, a loose 24-pin motherboard connection, a damaged front-panel cable, or a motherboard fault can create similar behavior. Note whether fans spin, indicator lights appear, and whether the behavior changes after the system has been unplugged for several minutes.

4. Fans or drives spin up and then the system turns off

A brief burst of fan or drive activity followed by an immediate shutdown can indicate that the system detects a problem during its startup checks. Power protection may activate if there is a short circuit or an electrical fault in the PSU, motherboard, graphics card, or a connected drive.

Disconnecting internal components without knowing what each cable does can create additional problems. If the computer has recently been upgraded, moved, or cleaned, a technician can inspect for a partially seated power connector or a component that is contacting the case incorrectly.

5. You notice a burning, hot-plastic, or unusual electrical smell

Acrid electrical odor, smoke, discoloration, melted plastic, or a PSU that becomes unusually hot should be treated as a safety warning. Turn the computer off, unplug it from the wall, and do not continue testing it. Do not open the PSU housing; dangerous voltages can remain inside even after it has been unplugged.

A smell may come from a power strip, wall outlet, cable, graphics card, or another component rather than the PSU itself. That is still a reason to stop. If there is smoke or visible damage, disconnect power only if it is safe to do so and seek qualified assistance.

6. You hear new clicking, buzzing, whining, or fan noise from the PSU area

Some electrical noise is normal, and fan noise can change with temperature. A new grinding sound may point to a worn PSU fan. Repeated clicking, crackling, or a sharp buzzing sound is more concerning, especially when it occurs with shutdowns, smell, flickering, or startup trouble.

Noise can be difficult to locate because it may come from a case fan, hard drive, graphics card, or an external power device. Stop using the computer if the sound resembles arcing or is accompanied by heat or odor. Do not place a microphone, metal tool, or hand inside a powered computer to locate the source.

7. The system shows strange instability after adding hardware

Problems that begin after installing a graphics card, additional drives, more fans, or other hardware deserve a power check. The PSU may not have enough capacity for the new configuration, or a power connector may be missing, loose, or connected incorrectly.

Capacity is not determined by the wattage printed on a graphics card alone. The PSU’s available output on the relevant rails, connector types, age, condition, and quality all matter. Modular PSU cables are especially important: cables from different models or brands may not be wired the same way, even when the plugs fit. Never reuse modular cables unless the PSU manufacturer confirms compatibility.

Safe checks you can perform first

Before opening a desktop, save important work and create or verify a backup if the computer is still stable. Repeated hard shutdowns can corrupt open files, and an electrical fault can damage storage or other components.

  • Check that the power cord is firmly connected at the computer and wall outlet.
  • Test the outlet with a known-good device, and temporarily bypass a suspect power strip or surge protector if doing so is safe.
  • Look for blocked vents, heavy dust buildup, and fans that do not spin during normal operation. Do not put fingers or tools near moving fans.
  • Record when the failure occurs: during startup, under load, after sleep, or when a particular device is connected.
  • Check whether the issue began after a hardware upgrade, storm, power outage, or move.
  • Review Windows reliability or event information for timing clues, but do not treat a generic unexpected-shutdown entry as proof of PSU failure.

Do not open the PSU, probe live components, or perform a paperclip test unless you fully understand the electrical risks and the exact procedure for that unit. A paperclip test may show that a PSU starts, but it does not prove that its voltage remains stable under load. Professional testing with appropriate equipment can be safer and more informative.

How technicians separate a PSU problem from other faults

A responsible diagnosis compares the symptoms with the system’s history and tests one likely cause at a time. Depending on the computer, this may include checking temperatures, inspecting connectors, testing memory, examining the graphics card, measuring PSU output with suitable equipment, and substituting a known-compatible PSU.

If the PSU is confirmed as defective, replacement should match the computer’s required connectors and electrical needs. On a prebuilt desktop, the replacement may need a particular physical size or proprietary connector. On a small-form-factor system, an ordinary ATX PSU may not fit. A replacement with a higher wattage is not automatically better if it is incompatible or poorly suited to the system.

When to stop using the computer

Unplug the computer and stop troubleshooting if you smell burning, see smoke or melted plastic, hear crackling, find visible damage, or notice that the PSU or cable is becoming abnormally hot.

Also stop if the computer contains important data and is repeatedly shutting down. A failing PSU is not the only possible cause, but continued attempts can make a separate storage or motherboard problem worse. Protecting the replacement and your data

After a repair, use a properly rated surge protector or uninterruptible power supply where appropriate, keep air vents clear, and avoid operating a desktop in a tightly enclosed space. These steps cannot prevent every failure, but they reduce avoidable stress on the system.

Most importantly, do not wait for a power problem to become a data-recovery problem. Maintain backups of documents, photos, accounting files, and other irreplaceable data on a separate device or trusted backup service. If BitLocker or another encryption system is enabled, make sure the recovery key is stored safely before hardware work begins. A PSU replacement should not require bypassing a password, activation lock, or other security control.

A single symptom rarely identifies the failed part. The safest approach is to treat electrical odors and visible damage as immediate stop signs, document the pattern of failures, protect your files, and have the power system tested before purchasing replacement parts.
