Windows PC Won’t Start? A Safe Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Learn how to separate a power problem from a display, hardware, Windows, or storage failure—and when to stop before your files are put at risk.

A Windows computer that will not start can have several very different causes. It may have no power at all, power on without showing a picture, stop at the manufacturer logo, or reach Windows recovery and fail there. The right next step depends on which symptom you see.

Start with the least invasive checks. Avoid repeatedly forcing the computer off, opening a power supply, resetting firmware settings without recording them, or reinstalling Windows while important files are still on the drive.

First, identify what “won’t start” means

Watch and listen carefully when you press the power button. Look for power lights, fan movement, keyboard lights, display changes, beeps, and any message on screen. This quick classification can prevent you from treating a Windows problem as a dead computer—or a hardware fault as a software problem.

If the computer has no sign of power

For a laptop, connect the original or correctly rated charger directly to a known-good wall outlet. Check whether the charger’s indicator changes, whether the laptop charging light responds, and whether the connector feels loose. Try another outlet, but do not use a damaged cable or a charger with an unknown voltage or connector.

For a desktop, confirm that the power cable is firmly connected to both the computer and the wall or surge protector. Check the switch on the back of the computer’s power supply, if it has one. A surge protector may have its own switch or reset button. Do not open the power supply; it can contain hazardous stored electrical energy even when unplugged.

Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, printers, and memory cards. Leave only the display, keyboard, and power connection attached, then try again. If the computer recently experienced a spill, burning smell, liquid exposure, lightning, or unusual heat, unplug it and stop. Continuing to apply power can increase damage.

Try a basic power reset

Unplug the computer’s charger or desktop power cable. If a laptop has a removable battery, remove it only if the manufacturer designed it to be removed easily. Hold the power button for about 15 seconds, reconnect the charger or power cable, and try starting it again. Do not force a sealed laptop battery out of the case.

If there is still no response, the fault may be the charger, battery, power jack, power button, motherboard, or desktop power supply. Confirming the failed part may require electrical testing or known-good replacement components. That is a sensible stopping point for a home user.

If it powers on but the screen stays blank

First confirm that the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input. Reseat the video cable at both ends and, if available, try another suitable cable or monitor input. On a laptop, try the manufacturer’s display toggle key combination once or twice; the exact keys vary by model.

Disconnect external monitors and docks, then test the built-in laptop screen. On a desktop, make sure the monitor cable is connected to the intended graphics output. If the computer has a separate graphics card, the correct port may be on that card rather than on the motherboard.

Do not assume that a spinning fan means the computer completed its hardware startup. If there is no manufacturer logo, no keyboard response, or a pattern of diagnostic beeps or lights, memory, graphics, firmware, or motherboard hardware may be involved. Reseating internal memory or graphics hardware requires opening the case and observing electrostatic and component-handling precautions. If you are not comfortable identifying the parts, stop before removing them.

If the Windows logo appears but startup fails

Remove external storage and other nonessential devices, then start the computer again. A faulty USB device or external drive can sometimes interfere with startup. If Windows shows a recovery screen, choose the available troubleshooting options rather than immediately selecting a reset or reinstall.

Use Windows recovery carefully

Windows may enter the Windows Recovery Environment after failed starts. Depending on the version and condition of the installation, options can include Startup Repair, System Restore, uninstalling a recent update, Startup Settings, or Command Prompt. The available choices are not identical on every computer.

Startup Repair is a reasonable first software repair attempt when Windows cannot complete its normal boot. It is not a guarantee, and it may not help if the storage device is failing or the problem is caused by hardware.

System Restore can change system files, drivers, and settings without normally being intended to remove personal documents, but you should still read the screen carefully and understand which restore point is being selected. Removing an update may be useful when the failure began immediately after an update, but it should not be treated as proof that the update is the cause.

Safe Mode can help determine whether a third-party driver or startup program is involved. If Windows starts in Safe Mode, back up important files before making other changes. Do not delete drivers or registry entries at random.

Warning: protect your files before destructive steps

Do not choose Reset this PC, reinstall Windows, format a drive, initialize a disk, or run aggressive disk-repair commands until you have considered data recovery. Some choices can remove applications and settings; others can make files harder to recover, especially when the drive is failing.

If the files are important and Windows will not start, the safest priority may be copying or imaging the drive before attempting repairs. A drive that is clicking, disappearing, becoming extremely slow, or producing repeated read errors should not be repeatedly rebooted or scanned. Professional recovery may be more appropriate than repair experiments.

If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key, stop and locate the legitimate recovery key through the account or organization that configured the computer. Do not try to bypass encryption. If the computer belongs to a business, school, or government organization, contact the administrator before changing recovery settings.

When you see a boot-device or drive message

Messages such as “No boot device,” “Operating system not found,” or a request to insert boot media can indicate that the internal drive is not detected, the boot configuration is damaged, or the wrong device is selected. Disconnect external drives and check whether the internal drive appears in the computer’s firmware setup.

Entering firmware setup usually involves pressing a model-specific key immediately after power-on. Avoid changing settings unless you record the original values first. In particular, changing storage mode, Secure Boot, or boot mode can create a new problem or prevent an encrypted Windows installation from starting.

If the drive is absent from firmware, repair tools may not be able to fix the problem. The drive, connection, or motherboard may need diagnosis. If the drive is detected but Windows still will not boot, recovery of the boot configuration may be possible, but commands should be chosen for the exact installation and drive layout.

Check for clues from recent changes

Think about what happened before the failure: a power interruption, liquid spill, new hardware, driver installation, update, malware incident, storage warning, or unusually slow performance. A computer that stopped after a physical event should be treated differently from one that failed after a software change.

If the computer starts only intermittently, use the working session to back up files immediately. Avoid spending that opportunity on optional updates or cleanup. If it shuts down under load, overheats, displays graphical corruption, or produces repeated storage errors, continued testing may worsen the situation.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • There is a burning smell, liquid damage, swelling battery, sparks, or unusual heat.
  • The internal drive is clicking, disappearing, or making repeated read errors.
  • Important files are not backed up and a reset or reinstall is being considered.
  • BitLocker or another encryption recovery prompt appears and the key is unavailable.
  • The computer has no display after basic cable and monitor checks, or shows diagnostic codes you cannot identify.
  • The machine belongs to a business, organization, or another person and you do not have authorization to change it.
