How to Fix the Blue Screen of Death in Windows 11

A Windows 11 blue screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Learn how to record the stop code, protect your files, test recent changes, and decide when the problem needs professional repair.

A blue screen in Windows 11, often called a BSOD, means Windows stopped because continuing could risk data or system damage. The screen may show a message such as CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, or INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. That message is useful, but it does not always identify the failed part by itself.

A single blue screen can result from a bad driver, a failed Windows update, damaged system files, overheating, unstable memory, storage problems, or a recently installed device or application. Repeated crashes need a methodical diagnosis rather than repeated restarts and guesses.

Before troubleshooting: protect your files

If Windows still starts normally, copy important documents, photos, browser exports, business files, and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or a trusted backup service. If the computer is unstable, avoid repeatedly forcing it to shut down. A failing storage device can deteriorate, and troubleshooting may make a weak drive harder to read.

Warning: Do not choose Reset this PC, delete partitions, reinstall Windows, or run aggressive disk-repair procedures until you have considered backup and encryption. If BitLocker or another device-encryption feature is enabled, make sure the recovery key is available before changing firmware, storage settings, or the Windows installation. If the files are important and the drive is making unusual noises, disappearing, or producing read errors, stop and consider data recovery instead of continuing with repairs.

1. Record the blue-screen information

Take a clear photo of the blue screen or write down the stop code and any file name shown below it. Also note what happened immediately beforehand: a Windows update, new driver, USB device, memory upgrade, software installation, drop, liquid exposure, or unusual heat.

If the message flashes too quickly, Windows can often be configured to stop automatically restarting:

  1. Right-click the Start button and select System.
  2. Choose Advanced system settings.
  3. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, select Settings.
  4. Clear Automatically restart, then select OK.

This setting does not repair the cause. It simply leaves the error visible long enough to record it.

2. Disconnect recent hardware and undo recent changes

Shut down the computer and disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, printers, webcams, and adapters. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and required network connection attached. Then test whether Windows remains stable.

If the problem began after installing hardware, memory, a driver, antivirus software, a system utility, or an update, reverse that one change if possible. Do not make several changes at once; doing so can hide the actual cause. For a desktop, a newly installed component should be checked for correct seating, but disconnect power first and avoid opening a machine if you are not comfortable working inside it.

3. Start Windows 11 in Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the computer is stable there, a normal-startup driver, application, or service becomes more likely. If it also crashes in Safe Mode, hardware, core Windows files, or storage problems deserve more attention.

From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. If Windows will not reach the sign-in screen, interrupt startup only as a last resort by turning the computer off during boot; repeated forced shutdowns are not a repair and can complicate recovery.

In Safe Mode, remove a recently installed driver or program from Settings > Apps or Device Manager. Be especially cautious with graphics, storage, chipset, and security software. If the screen is blank, distorted, or crashes during graphics use, the display driver or graphics hardware may be involved. Download replacement drivers only from the computer manufacturer, motherboard manufacturer, or the hardware maker.

4. Check Windows updates and system files

Once the system is stable enough, install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update. If the blue screens began immediately after an update, use Windows Update history to review it and consider uninstalling that specific update. Windows may not offer every update for removal, and removing security updates should be treated as a temporary diagnostic step.

Windows includes tools that can check protected system files. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), then run:

sfc /scannow

Allow it to finish. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow again and restart. These commands can repair Windows component damage, but they cannot repair failing RAM, a defective SSD, overheating, or an incompatible third-party driver.

5. Test memory and storage carefully

Unstable memory can produce different stop codes on different occasions. Search the Start menu for Windows Memory Diagnostic, choose to restart and check, and allow the test to complete. A clean result does not prove that memory is healthy; intermittent faults can be missed, and some systems need a longer, manufacturer-level test.

For storage, open Terminal as administrator and run:

chkdsk C: /scan

This performs an online scan of the Windows volume. If it reports problems, do not immediately add repair switches to a drive containing important files without a backup. A failing drive may become less accessible during extended repair activity. Check the drive’s health with the computer or SSD manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when available, and pay attention to symptoms such as very slow file access, disappearing drives, repeated repair screens, or installation errors.

6. Use recovery tools when the crash followed a known event

If the problem began recently, System Restore may return Windows system files and settings to an earlier restore point without removing personal documents. It can remove drivers and applications installed after that point, so review the affected programs before confirming.

Windows Recovery Environment also provides Startup Repair, uninstall-update options, and Command Prompt. These tools are useful, but the wrong command or a change to boot configuration can make startup more difficult. If Windows displays a BitLocker recovery prompt, do not guess at recovery keys or alter partitions. Locate the legitimate recovery key through the Microsoft account or organization that manages the device.

When the blue screen points to hardware

Hardware becomes more likely when crashes occur during demanding work, appear before Windows loads, continue after a clean driver installation, or happen with different stop codes. Other clues include overheating, fan problems, random shutdowns, memory-test errors, SMART warnings, screen artifacts, liquid exposure, or a computer that fails to detect its SSD.

A desktop may need checks of memory modules, cooling, power delivery, and motherboard connections. A laptop may require inspection of the cooling system, battery, charging circuit, storage, or system board. Do not open a machine that is under warranty, swollen, wet, or showing signs of electrical damage unless you understand the risks. A swollen battery should not be pressed, punctured, or used.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • The computer crashes before you can back up important files.
  • The storage drive disappears, clicks, reports repeated errors, or becomes extremely slow.
  • Blue screens continue in Safe Mode or during hardware diagnostics.
  • You see liquid damage, a swollen battery, burning odor, abnormal heat, or electrical damage.
  • You are being asked for a BitLocker recovery key and do not know where it is.
  • The next proposed step is a reset, reinstall, BIOS change, partition deletion, or firmware update.

At that point, continued trial and error can increase data loss or leave the computer less recoverable. A repair technician can separate software diagnosis from hardware testing, preserve the original drive when appropriate, and explain the risks before any reset or replacement.
