How to Recover Data From a Computer That Won’t Start

A computer that will not boot may still contain accessible files. Learn how to protect the drive, check the safest recovery options, and recognize when continued troubleshooting could make data loss worse.

A computer that will not start does not necessarily mean its files are gone. The problem may be limited to the display, power system, Windows startup process, or another component that prevents the computer from loading normally. In other cases, the storage drive itself may be failing.

The safest approach is to treat the files as more important than the computer until you know what has failed. Avoid repeated repair attempts, resets, or reinstallations if the drive contains irreplaceable photos, business documents, accounting records, or other data that is not backed up.

Before troubleshooting: protect the data

Stop and consider professional recovery before continuing if the drive is clicking, grinding, repeatedly disconnecting, unusually hot, or showing signs of physical damage. A failing hard disk can deteriorate further when powered on. Repeatedly starting it, running repair utilities, or attempting a full operating system repair may reduce the chance of recovering the files.

Also stop if the computer was exposed to liquid, suffered a drop, has a swollen battery, smells burned, or shows electrical damage. Do not open a damaged battery or continue using a computer that is getting dangerously hot.

  • Do not choose “Reset this PC,” erase, initialize, or format the drive.
  • Do not reinstall Windows or macOS onto the original drive.
  • Do not run disk cleanup, defragmentation, or “repair” software before copying important files.
  • Do not keep guessing passwords or encryption keys.
  • Do not open a hard drive or SSD unless you have the proper specialist equipment and procedures.

If the computer contains business or regulated information, consider whether your organization has backup, retention, privacy, or incident-response requirements before connecting the drive to another computer.

First determine what “won’t start” means

Pay attention to the exact symptoms. A blank screen with lights and fan noise is different from a computer with no power, and both are different from a machine that displays an error before Windows or macOS loads.

  • No lights, fan noise, or response: The issue may involve the charger, battery, power button, motherboard, or another power circuit. The storage drive may still be healthy.
  • Power comes on but the screen stays blank: The display, memory, graphics hardware, or firmware may be involved. An external monitor or a careful hardware diagnosis may reveal whether the computer is running.
  • A logo appears, then the computer restarts or freezes: The operating system, storage drive, or a hardware component may be preventing startup.
  • An error says no boot device was found: The drive may be disconnected, damaged, or no longer recognized by the firmware.
  • Windows or macOS asks for recovery, a password, or an encryption key: The files may be protected even if the drive itself is readable.

This distinction matters because data recovery may not require repairing the original computer. If the drive is healthy, the goal is usually to access it from another working system or boot environment and copy the files to separate storage.

Check simple, low-risk possibilities

Disconnect USB drives, memory cards, printers, docking stations, and other accessories. A faulty external device can interfere with startup. Leave the computer connected to a known-good charger if it is a laptop, but do not continue if the charger, port, or battery shows damage.

If the computer powers on, give it one controlled startup attempt and record any message or sound. Photograph an error message if necessary. Avoid repeatedly forcing it off while it is trying to start.

For a desktop, confirm that the monitor is powered and connected to the correct video input. This may identify a display problem rather than a storage problem. Do not remove internal components just to test the computer if you are not comfortable working inside it.

Look for an existing backup first

The fastest and safest recovery may be a backup rather than access to the failed computer. Check external backup drives, Windows backup tools, macOS backup tools, cloud storage, business file servers, and folders synchronized by services such as OneDrive or iCloud. A backup is useful only if it contains the needed files and can be opened successfully.

Be careful with synchronization folders. Deleting or moving files on one device can sometimes synchronize those changes elsewhere. If you are unsure, pause synchronization and work from a copy or contact the person responsible for the account.

When the computer can still reach a recovery screen

Windows and macOS may offer recovery environments when normal startup fails. These environments can sometimes provide a way to copy files, use Safe Mode, or diagnose startup problems. However, recovery menus may also include options that change or erase the drive.

Read each option carefully. Startup repair is not the same as data recovery, and its result is not guaranteed. If the files are important, copy them before trying repairs whenever the environment allows it. A technician may use a bootable recovery system or connect the drive to another computer, but the procedure must account for the drive’s condition and encryption status.

On Windows, Safe Mode can help when a driver or startup program is the problem, but it will not solve a physically failing drive. On a Mac, macOS Recovery can provide access to disk information and reinstall options, but reinstalling the operating system should not be the first step when files have not been secured.

Copying files from the drive

If the drive is detected and appears stable, a technician or experienced user may connect it to another computer using a suitable enclosure or adapter. The target computer must have enough free space, and the recovered files should be copied to a different physical drive, not back onto the source drive.

Start with the most valuable folders and files. Common locations include the Windows user profile, Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, and application-specific folders. On macOS, user data is commonly stored inside the Users folder. Business applications may store information elsewhere, and some databases require an application-specific export rather than ordinary file copying.

Copying can fail because of permissions, encryption, drive errors, or a damaged file system. Do not assume that a folder that opens is complete. Compare file counts and sizes where practical, and open representative copies from the destination drive. Preserve the original drive in its current state if further recovery may be needed.

Encryption and account access warnings

BitLocker on Windows and FileVault on macOS can protect data even when the drive is removed from the computer. Recovery may require the correct password, recovery key, or an account with authorized access. A Microsoft account, Apple account, work account, or organization administrator may be involved, depending on how the computer was configured.

Do not attempt to bypass encryption, activation locks, passwords, or other security controls. If you own the computer, locate the recovery key through the account or organization that manages it. If the key is unavailable, the data may not be recoverable through ordinary software methods. A repair provider should be able to explain what information is required before proceeding.

Signs that software recovery may be unsafe

Stop home recovery attempts and seek a qualified data-recovery or repair assessment when the drive is not detected, disappears during copying, reports severe errors, becomes unusually slow, makes abnormal noises, or causes the computer to freeze. An SSD that fails electronically may provide little warning and may not be recoverable by replacing a simple part.

Professional work may begin with a non-destructive assessment and, when appropriate, a sector-level image of the source drive. The exact method depends on the storage type, failure symptoms, encryption, and condition of the file system. No responsible technician can promise a result without examining the device.

How to prepare a repair or recovery appointment

Write down what happened immediately before the failure, including drops, liquid exposure, updates, power events, unusual noises, and any error messages. Bring the computer, its charger if relevant, and recovery information you are authorized to provide. Explain which files matter most and whether the drive contains sensitive business or personal information.

Ask whether the proposed work is intended to repair the computer, copy files, or perform specialist recovery. Those are different goals. Also ask where recovered files will be stored, whether the original drive will be altered, and what happens if the drive is found to be encrypted or physically failing.

After the files are recovered

Open important documents and a selection of photos or other files from the recovery destination. Keep at least one additional backup, preferably on a separate device or reputable cloud service. For a small business, use a backup plan that includes automatic backups, off-site or cloud copies, and periodic checks that restoration actually works.

A computer that will not start may need a simple repair, a replacement drive, or specialist recovery. Protecting the original data first gives you the best chance of making a sound decision without turning a startup problem into a larger data-loss problem.
